We have developed a comprehensive program that addresses the root causes of poverty and provides tangible solutions to help individuals and families overcome it. Our holistic approach focuses not just on addressing immediate needs, but also on empowering you to build long-term stability for yourself and for your family.
Through our Selah Living program, we provide you access to education, job training, financial literacy classes, mental health resources, and other essential services. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to secure employment, manage your finances effectively, and develop a positive mindset.

The Meaning of Selah
The word “Selah” is a Hebrew term found 71 times in the book of Psalms, often interpreted as meaning “to pause” or “to reflect.” When you participate in the program, you can take time out of your daily life and spend concentrated time working toward positive change.
Achieve Stability
When you enter Selah Living you will:
- be empowered to restore your sense of agency and power
- collaborate with therapists to interrupt and break the cycle of poverty
- learn a holistic approach to stability and self-sufficiency
- encounter a faith-based perspective honoring your unique journey
- collaborate with social workers and therapists to break the cycle of poverty
Eligibility
You can utilize Selah Living if you are:
- currently pregnant or parenting
- a resident of the state of Missouri
- have an employment history
- an active participant in our ConnectCare or Pregnancy Support Programs
Occasionally, we consider referrals from partner agencies.

- Parenting Skills: Equipping you with tools to be an effective, nurturing parent
- Housing Assistance: Helping you secure and maintain stable housing
- Utility Assistance: Giving you support in managing and paying for essential utilities
- Budgeting and Saving Skills: Offering financial education to promote your long-term stability
- Essential Supplies: Providing you access to food, clothing, and supplies related to pregnancy, newborn care, and parenting
- Case Management: Partnering with one of our experts who gives you personalized support and guidance throughout the program

- Referral: You can be referred to Selah through our Pregnancy Support or ConnectCare departments.
- Assessment: Our case managers work closely with you to assess your needs and motivation.
- Enrollment: If you meet the program’s requirements and show a commitment to the program, you will be referred to the Selah Living Program Director.
- Personalized Plan: Create your own plan for stability and growth with the help of Selah’s program experts.
- Ongoing Support: Receive continuous support and resources as you work toward your goals.

Answering the Call: Tyler’s Journey to Foster Love
Tyler*, a single, 26-year old young man, called CFS to inquire if he could get rental assistance to move into a new residence with his foster son, Brandon*. Tyler was renting a home that became a safety issue for his 1-year old foster son and after discussing the issue with the landlord was forced to move immediately.
Tyler’s story is unique in that he resided in Texas when he was informed that his infant cousin was placed in the foster care system with no relatives able to provide care for him. Tyler decided to answer the call, uproot his life and successful career, and move to St. Louis. Once in St. Louis he went through all of the steps to become an approved and licensed foster parent and found a job at a significant pay cut. Tyler’s heart and dedication to providing a safe place for his foster son, made it easy to approve him for rental assistance.
Time was of the essence in securing a new home for Tyler and Brandon. Due to the necessity of having to leave their rental immediately, Tyler was forced to move temporarily to a residence in Illinois. Brandon, was required to stay in Missouri and had to return temporarily to his previous foster family.
Tyler’s motivated and optimistic spirit was truly inspirational to all of the staff at CFS. After two weeks of searching, Tyler was able to move into a 1-bedroom apartment. Brandon was returned to his care the next day.
CFS is happy to provide rental assistance to Tyler and Brandon for the following three months to allow time for them to get settled and save for the future. We wish them luck and success!
